CAE TUTOR/STUDENT POLICIES
In order to insure that the CAE's services are productive and useful, we want to explain some of the issues a the heart of the CAE's philosophy and operation. The policies described below are designed to maximize the quality of tutoring services and to result in rewarding interactions for tutors and students.
I. Tutoring Philosophy: tutor's work is grounded in helping you develop your critical thinking, problem-solving, and study skills as well as your understanding of key concepts and issues. Tutors are neither TA's responsible merely for presenting/analyzing class lectures nor spoonfeeders of course content; they are responsible for helping you develop useful approaches to studying and understanding course materials and for helping you evolve skills that you can apply in various class settings.
II. Tutor/Student Contact: after you have filled out the forms to request a tutor(s), you should return the card to the CAE within 1-2 days (depending on student demand) to receive a card which will have your tutor's (s') name, phone #, and email address. The tutor has parallel information on you, and therefore both parties are responsible for contacting each other to set up appointments. Most appointments involve one-on-one tutoring, but some are small group based; one-on-one's are not guaranteed.
Tutor's work is not based on crisis intervention; our hope is that you will meet with your tutor(s) proactively and regularly over the course of the semester in order to build your skills and confidence to improve your chances of success. Consistent, sustained meetings with your tutor will prove most beneficial in your becoming a better student.
The CAE does offer walk-in tutoring hours in a limited number of courses both here in the CIW library and in other sites in residential colleges around campus. You should feel free to utilize the tutors at these locations both on a short-term or long-term basis. Click here to view the Walk-In Hours.
III. Missed Appointment Policy: if it becomes apparent that you cannot make a previously scheduled tutorial appointment, it is your responsibility to contact the tutor to cancel the appointment; you should do so at least the day before your appointment. The tutor has the same responsibility towards you. If you are unable to reach your tutor to cancel, please call the CAE at 777-9235 so a message can be left in the tutor's folder.
IV. Evaluation: once you have met with a tutor 3-4 times, please pick up a "Tutor Evaluation Form" at the front desk and fill it out. We appreciate constructive critiques of tutor's work and count on your feedback to help us assess and improve the quality of our services.
